Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide
Now, of my threescore years and ten.
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.
And since to look at things in bloom,
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.
'Loveliest of Trees, the Cherry now', from AE Housman's, 'A Shropshire Lad'
"I have a very basic desire as an artist; I like to go to a certain place and make a picture about it. I consider myself a visual diarist and compare painting to telling stories; I want the viewer to feel what I felt when I painted it. This may explain my love of incredibly diverse artists, such as, Monet, Peter Lanyon, Bonnard, Fred Yates and John Virtue who may on the surface appear to be totally different, but they are all linked by the way they are able to transport me, as a viewer to a specific place and time.
I love the process of telling stories through painting so much that I am wholly elated when I have created a painting that I am happy with. I just want to go and do it again immediately. The process of making pictures outside can be extremely draining as so many senses are being stimulated, but this also produces the most interesting visual stories.
This collection is as honest and real as I could make it. In the words of the famous British artist, Walter Sickert, 'Every picture tells a story - if it doesn't, it ain't"- Andrew Tozer, March 2019.
This show 'Telling Stories' is a celebration of the seasons in Cornwall, the first works were produced last year in the glorious sunshine, and Andrew has been painting out in the landscape since. We have been lucky enough to have worked with Andrew for the last 20 years here at Beside The Wave. Within this collection, we can see a renewed passion and energy, culminating in a body of work featuring some of his best work to date.
We are delighted to announce that the studio/gallery is now open to visitors every Thursday between 12pm and 7pm. If you would like to visit outside of these hours, we are happy to arrange a private appointment.
All available paintings on the website can be viewed and purchased and prints are always available. It is a wonderful chance to speak to Andrew about his creative process and to have a first glimpse of any new work.
(Fresh eggs usually available too!)
We look forward to welcoming you

Andrew's name has become synonymous with this beautiful area of south Cornwall which inspired him when he returned to Cornwall and revisited his childhood family walks after leaving Central St Martins School of Art in London. Since then Andrew has returned time and time again to document the changing light and scenery of this captivating, Cornish idyll.
Cornwall Open Studios has rapidly grown to become a major showcase for some of Cornwall's leading artists and invites art lovers and collectors into the very hub of the artist's creative process. Andrew has chosen this platform to launch his exclusive new collection celebrating 20 years of painting The Helford.
'Paintings of The Helford, 20 Years On' will showcase some of Andrew's most challenging work of this area. It sees him painting on large canvas within the environment as well as his little treasure-like pochade pieces which all capture his love of both painting and of place.
Cornwall Today Magazine recently published an indepth article about the forthcoming show. You can read it here.
During the course of the Open Studio event, Andrew will be on hand to chat about his work and his process and there will also be painting demonstrations.
We would love to see you all; come and join us for a drink and a chat
